Looking over the ledge after an extensive hike, “extensive” sure seemed to disappear after seeing just a sliver of the awe-inspiring view. Chloe Wilsem and her family sprinkled the ashes of beloved Grandpa Herbert over the city of Glendora.
Though not having the absolute “Deepest roots” of Glendora, Grandpa Herbert Wilsem was known as the “city protector” even long after his retirement. After serving in the Air Force as an immigrant from Germany, Herbert soon assumed the role of the Los Angeles County Sheriff.
After withdrawing from his duty as deputy sheriff, Herbert acquired numerous jobs around the neighborhood despite his old age. From being your town lifeguard to your community gardener, Herbert continued to serve his city even during his long-deserved retirement. Chloe recalls her grandpa as being a very well-loved man of the city.
In the book, Growing Up Glendoran by Mikayla McKenzie, Chloe’s sister Laura remembers that her favorite moments shared with him were hiking on long trails. For Chloe, it was baking a German honey cake named Honigkuchen that her grandpa made her repeat until she got it right.
Soon after his passing, the Wilmsems hiked one of Grandpa Herbert’s most favored trails where they poured the ashes of his remnants that floated across the very city he dedicated his life to. The wondrous, vast city of Glendora.
