Preview of Wrestling 24-25

The mats are laid out and the gym is filled with excitement for the matches ahead while the team gets ready to dominate their opponents. GHS wrestlers prepare for an exhilarating season, enhanced with the challenges of fierce competition and steady goals set on vast growth and improvement.

With second nationally ranked Sam Sachs beginning her senior year, returning athletes ready to blast beyond their goals, and newcomers entering the first year of wrestling, the season will be packed with new experiences and remarkable feats. Kennedy Zubo (‘27) explained how there was a heavy increase of girls this wrestling season, which strengthened the program and brought more athletes together. Although, aside from blossoming friendships, competition will flourish as well, with the first league game at Ayala on December 11th and their first home game on December 18th. Each competition is different from the last, with different weight classes competing against each other with altering techniques and calculated moves to knock down opponents.

Tartans should expect to be engaged in supportive crowds and intrigued by each wrestler's talents as they step onto the mat and intensely challenge the opposing team. Emilio Herrera (‘25) suggests that the competitions are intertwined with variety depending on each player, and that “watching the different weight classes is like watching different sports” captivating the audience and intriguing them to keep coming back for more action. He highlights that through the “variety when you are watching” the matches seem a “lot of fun” and that “the big guys are slow but when they go down they go down hard” and that “the smaller they are the faster they get” which makes each brawl different from the last, all special and compelling to each observer.

As the season begins both newcomers and returning wrestlers alike will make their marks with their competitive attitudes and significant strides to endure tough training through the winter season. Whether you decide to cheer from the stands or from the sidelines, be prepared to watch unforgettable moments when these athletes push themselves past their limits to continuously grow and aim for victory.
